DS90UA101-Q1: Protection Against Incorrect Interfacing to Ethernet

Is this device protected against wrong interconnects to ethernet signaling?

We are intending to use this device to transfer audio between two products using an STP link for a commercial/consumer application.

The serializer would use an RJ45 connector as the interface between the two products to keep it user friendly.

However there is another RJ45 connector on the product for ethernet capabilities.

This is highly likely to lead to some customer wrongly inserting the ethernet link into the STP link.

Therefore, can you please advise if this would damage the part? If so, do you have any recommendations that would protect the device to allow us to use it in this scenario.

In addition, please advise where I can get information on the maturity of the device.

We need a minimum of 7yrs production lifetime and want to ensure this product will not be EOL'd.

    one design requirement of the SER-DES is to use an AC-Coupling capacitor at the FPD-Link inputs/outputs to protect the devices from DC voltage.

    Against AC signal, there is no protection. If you connect a wrong device with much higher signal Amplitude, you may dmage the input interface.

    Hence, I would recommend you compare the Signal Amplitude of these devices with the Ethernet device you intend to use and see if that is a risk or not. If there is a resk, I recommend you to use different connectors, or at least connector color.

    Regarding the life time, these devices are not very old. They were released for the first time on 2013. Our devices have a life time average of 15 years. So you should be on the safe side.
