ISO1050: Enhanced Isolation Device Sourcing

Part Number: ISO1050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1044, ISO1042

Hi Team,

Do we have device with more than 0.4mm DIT? Customer need such device to do enhanced isolation. Thanks.

BRs,

Francis

  • Hi Francis,

Sorry, it looks like we do not have any other isolated CAN transceivers in our portfolio with more than 0.4 mm of DTI. The other isolated CAN transceivers in our portfolio, the ISO1042 and the ISO1044, both have a DTI value greater 17 μm, but this does not meet the requirement of more 0.4 mm that the customer has specified.

Additionally, I would also like to point out that I did a quick check of some of our other non-CAN isolator devices, and I wasn't able to find any that had a DTI larger than 0.4mm. Therefore, it doesn't look like we will be able to meet the customers requirements on this parameter.

    Regards,

    Kenneth

  • Hi Francis,

I was recently informed by other members of the team that the 0.4 mm DTI requirement from the customer is most likely not necessary. The 0.4 mm DTI requirements given by the customer most likely refers to optocouplers, which typically require much higher DTI because they use a much weaker dielectric material for isolation. Since our isolation devices use a higher quality material (silicon dioxide) for isolation, the distance of the insulation material/dielectric (DTI) does not have to be 0.4 mm in order to meet the isolation requirements of the system. For more information about this, please refer to this application note: https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slla563

Could you please provide some more information about the isolation ratings that the customer requires for there application, so that I can confirm if our isolators meet these requirements?

    Regards,

    Kenneth

  • Hi Kenneth,

Yes, you are right, it relates to optocouplers. Customer can accept 2 standard:

    • >0.4mm DIT
    • Reinforce insulation(VDE certificate), Double Protection(UL certificate)

Do we have devices can meet above requirements?

    BRs,

    Francis

  • Hi Francis,

Reinforce insulation(VDE certificate), Double Protection(UL certificate)

We do not have any isolated CAN transceivers in our portfolio that have the double protection certification from UL. In regards to the reinforced isolation certification from VDE, the ISO1042 is certified to meet this standard (for certification proof, please refer to this document: https://www.ti.com/lit/cr/szzq123r/szzq123r.pdf). If the customer is okay with using a device that is certified for reinforced isolation (VDE) but not double protection (UL), then they can consider using the ISO1042 for their application.

    Regards,

    Kenneth

  • Hi Kenneth,

Customers must need UL certificate. I know the background as I had talked with Saleem and Michael before. Thanks for your help. No problem here.

    BRs,
