SN6507: Gate Driver Bias power

Part Number: SN6507
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54308, SN6501

Is there reference design for gate driver bias power? It should have 3 - 4 output windings on the transformer.

The output voltage would be +15V/-5V for each rail. Thanks.

Regards

Brian

  • Hi Brian,

I am not aware of any reference designs with 3 to 4 outputs with each one being ±15V. Since SN6507 is an open-loop push-pull transformer driver, having 3 to 4 output windings might not be the best way to generate multiple rails. It is best to keep a separate SN6507 for each ±15V output to position the power supply close to the gate driver. Alternatively, you could have 2 or 3 transformers driven by same SN6507 provided they are located close to the device.

Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks.

  • Thanks. Since customer is now using TPS54308 with Flybuck scheme, it is able to generate multiple outputs for bias power of inverter. Cost is a concern.
We are just thinking how to position  SN6507 to replace it.

Is SN6507 positioning in communication iso power not bias power of gate driver on inverter , right?

  • Hi Brian,

Customer can still use a transformer with 3 to 4 output windings connected to SN6507 but we currently do not have a reference design or a transformer to recommend. If customer can work with a transformer vendor to have push-pull transformer with 3 to 4 windings, then SN6507 should still work.

The output voltage might not be as tightly regulated as TPS54308 but I believe Gate Drive applications can work with such outputs.

If customer doesn't all the features of SN6507 then they could use SN6501/SN6505 to drive multiple smaller transformers and it could still be cost-effective. Let me know if either of the options work for customer, thanks.
