ISO7241A-EP: Current protection

Does this component provides shot circuit protection?

    Could you please elaborate on where exactly are you looking for short circuit protection (SCP)?
    SCP is usually provided on power supply outputs which source current to loads. Since ISO7241A-EP is not a power supply, there is no SCP implemented. Please do share us more information on your requirement so that we can help you better.

    Regarding the device part number selection, is there a particular spec in ISO7241A-EP that interested you for choosing this device? ISO7241A-EP is an old device family, we now have much better device that offer much better performance. ISO77xx is one of such latest digital isolator families and ISO7741 would be an equivalent pin-compatible part number against ISO7241A and offers much better performance.

    I'm working on a respin and the previous design was using ISO7241A. I'll look into ISO7741, thank you, I appreciate the recommendation! 

    My question was referring to a short to GND on the output pin. If it won't be damaged by the current produced by the short in either a 5V or 3.3V supply.

  • Hi Joseph,

    Thanks for your inputs and clarification. It is uncommon to see short circuit protection for digital CMOS/TTL I/Os and so is the case with most of TI's digital isolators. These devices do not implement any SCP for the output channels. One would have to implemented necessary protection through external series resistors or other means if SCP on outputs is desired.

    ISO77xx supports a maximum of ±4mA of output current for 5V operation, though device can source/sink higher current to support faster rise/fall times, sourcing/sinking more than 4mA of current is not recommended and continuous operation with this violation could lead to device damage.
