SN74LV8154: Maximum output current

Part Number: SN74LV8154

In relation to another question that just got answered I have to apply pull-down resistors on the Y outputs of this counter and while I would like the outputs to fall as fast as possible for reliable operation I don't want to overload the component and I'm not sure if the "absolute maximum ratings" and "recommended operating conditions" of the output current is per pin or for the whole device.

The recommended output current (high and low) appears to be 12mA with a 5v supply so (assuming per pin) it could easily drive a 1K load but 8*5mA is 40mA which is over the absolute maximum continuous output, although it will only last at most 20uS, would you recommend 1.5K resistors instead?
