TXS0102: short protection

Part Number: TXS0102
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC2T45-Q1

I have a question regarding the component “TXS0102QDCURQ1” (Bi-directional Level Translator).

I am considered about using the component when I have the output shorted to ground (GND), will the component protect my output before the component.

I am afraid that it will open the gate and I will have contention between the fpga output to the GND which will damage the FPGA I/O.

I tried my best to describe in the diagram in file txs0102.ppt:

  • Hello,
I have asked our translation expert to take a look at this and get back to you.
  • Hi Itai,

The TXS is passive semi buffered translation device which connects the 2 sides when signal is low and when signal is high, disconnects the internal FET and has the internal pullup to level translate.
When the output is shorted to gnd at the TXS IO port, the FET will be ON with its on state resistance in between 25-100ohm and connects the FPGA IO port.
If the FPGA is trying to drive high, it wont be able to switch. It will try to source as much current (abs max current beyond the recommended condition) and it could damage the port or potentially the FPGA device. appropriate current limit needs to be in place.

  • Hi Shreyas,

the suggestion for the AXC family doesn't help me because my translation is from 3.3V to 5V. the part accepts up to 3.6V max.

can you give me a suggestion for a small current limt (dual or quad) if possible. my current is very low - less than 20 mA (it is a discrete).

    ps.  i need junction temp -40  -  125.

    Thanks,  Itai

  • Itai san,

I would suggest using the SN74LVC2T45-Q1 for 5V translation. There is no internal current limit in this device, however, short to gnd would not likely damage the FPGA device as they would be isolated from the LVC device.
Please let me know if this works.
