Hi,

I wanted to use PLC(power line communication) in my schematic. I selected TM4C129ENCPDTI3R controller for the same. How i can interface this controller and PLC. This controller having ethernet feature. How to use this ethernet with PLC .Which transceiver is suitable for this.

Hi,

The Ethernet PHY is integrated within the TM4C129ENCPDTI3R MCU. You don't need an external PHY. But please follow the system design guideline on the selection of transformer and protection diode. Below will aid your development.

- Various Ethernet examples can be found in TivaWare library.

- TM4C129 System Design Guideline at https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/spma056. Go to section 4 on Ethernet for interfacing.

Hi,

I'm not familiar with PLC applications. I suppose you need an external modem chip to interface (modulate/demodulate) with the power line. If the host MCU can interface with the modem chip via SPI, I2C or UART interface, I don't see a reason why TM4C129 cannot support. If you ask if TM4C has an integrated modem to support PLC, the answer is no.

Hello Thanseela,

I will add in that I know TM4C is used in PLC application by other customers so the device is very much capable of meeting the requirements for typical PLC applications. We just do not have details on how it was implemented or any PLC reference designs to offer you.

What is the use of Ethernet over power line communication here in TM4C. If i will use this ethernet for PLC,any external modem is required?Can you please suggest any modem for particular application.

HI,

As I said, I have no knowledge on power line communication application. However, I find this TI reference design that may help clarify some of your doubts. The processor used in this TI reference design is TMS320F28375. In addition, AFE032 is an analog front end (PLC) device capable of transformer-coupled connections to the power-line while under the control of a MCU. The software stack/library are for TMS320F28375. TivaWare library for TM4C129 does not have any software stack or examples for PLC applications.
