TMS570LC4357: Connections for TI CAN Communication Example

Hello,

I'm attempting to follow the CAN Communication example from TI which was posted on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrKQN-sor-s) 11 years ago. The example posted is for the MSP430. However, I've edited the code as necessary in HalCoGen and Code Composer Studio so that it successfully compiles for the TMS570LC4357. The video goes through the full example form beginning to end. However, it does not actually show the connections between the 2 MSP430 boards. Additionally, there is no circuit diagram given for how to connect the 2 devices for CAN Communication.

Because of this missing information, I am unable to get anything to display to the console as is shown in the video. Is there a connection diagram you can provide along with the proper HalCoGen setup to get this to work for the TMS570LC4357?

Hi Ronald,

The example is posted for TMS570LS3137, it is not for MSP430 right?

And CAN module is same between TMS570LS3137 and TMS570LC4357.

However, if you want other example code then you can find it in HALCoGEN "Help_Topics" Section.

Thanks for the help, Jagadish. I've already gotten it to compile. The only reason I mentioned HalCoGen was just in case there was some minor settings difference that I didn't take into account.

The main problem I'm having is that the video never shows how to connect device A to device B. What I'm really in need of is a circuit diagram showing how to connect either the two MSP430s from the video or the two TMS570LC4357s that I'm actually working with. The video completely skips how things are supposed to be wired.

Hi Ronald,

The connectivity was very simple.

First the controller will have CANxTX and CANxRX signals like as shown below:

Now these signals should need to connect with CAN transceivers to generate the differential CAN bus signals like CANH and CANL as shown below:

Once you got the CAN bus signals (CANH and CANL), then you can directly connect them on bus as shown below:

If you are testing with only two devices, then you can just connect the CANH of device-1 with CANH of device-2 and similarly CANL of device-1 with CANL of device-2.

Thanks, Jagadish. This is very helpful. Now I'm a bit confused about one thing. I thought the LAUNCHXL2-570LC43 board had an onboard CAN transceiver. Is this a separate component I'll have to acquire in order to be able to use the CAN communication capabilities of the TMS570LC4357 MCU?

Launchpad doesn't have onboard CAN transceiver like on HDK boards. Yes we have to externally order them to interface with controller CAN terminals on Launchpad.
