AM2434: How to read my board's MAC address ?

Hi Ashwani,

I didn't understand how to read my board's MAC address.

I see on  WireShark that my MAC is 28:B5:E8:CA:F6:C3 - how can I get it from within my code ?

I don't see anything on address 0x200 - just zeroes.

What is the best way to write / burn new  MAC and  where in the code ?

I still don't understand how to change MAC from a  c function.

I though it would be possible to directedly write into MAC register of the am243x CPU:

I would suggest you to move to latest SDK release (if possible) and use sysconfig feature to have custom MAC.

Hi Ashwani,

I saw that I can change the MAC via the syscofig.

At production line I have to assign a new unique MAC for each board.

I have "One Same" app.hs_fs file burned into board's FLASH for all my boards.

 When a certain board is connected to TCP - I'd like to store it's unique MAC  in it's internal FLASH then read and use it on power-up.

So I'm looking for a simple way to program the am243x MAC register. (At each board's power-up)

There is no EEPROM device on my board.

I can store the required MAC at the FLASH device I have.

I ask for a way to take the MAC from FLASH and write it into the am243x MAC register , at startup.

The previous articles show only how to read MAC - technique which I already use.

Now I have to write the MAC.

As per my understanding code based on the above link, you don't need to write MAC data on a particular Register. Instead of this, you need to write in to mac buffer wich is availble in the EEPROM read function. So, I assume that the same buffer can be used by drivers to write in to MAC addresses Registers . So, here you need to read data from Flash and write in to mac buffer. This way seems works. Can you please try and see if this works ?

I assume that the reading functionality can be moved to SBL since SBL already uses the OSPI periperal, and flash again, you don't need to use them in your application.

So, already you have written MAC on external memory and read it from the SBL and write it on particular MSRAM memory.

In your Application, you need to allocate one memory location for MAC and the same can be written in to Mac buffers.

I am not the right expert on Ethernet drivers but I am trying to provide some suggestions and see which might be feasible for you.

If you can switch to SDK 9.2,

AM243x MCU+ SDK: Enet Migration Guide

• your syscfg under Enet(CPSW or ICSS) under "Board Config"->"Custom Board".

• Make sure you save a copy of "ti_board_config.c" before doing that.

• Then you should create a custom source file called "board". The build system should detect this. 

• After that you can just copy paste the source of "ti_board_config.c" into board.c.

• There you can rewrite the function "EnetBoard_getMacAddrList" to read MAC address from FLASH memory address instead of EEPROM memory address

I've tried that but then all LwIP initialization fails.

I suppose there's a MAC register  at the am243x which can be written at my main.c , maybe directedly or using some IOCTL call.

Just want to re-confirm did you move your code baseline to SDK 9.2 or still on SDK 8.6 ?

As we have improved custom board / MAC address support in SDK 9.2.

Now we are all using the ind_comms_sdk_am243x_09_01_00_03 because of the Ethercat support.

Please write a code example which sets a new MAC address to the am243x.

Can you please draw a diagram what is running on ICSSG0, ICSSG1, CPSW?

We will prioritize this thread over the DMA reset thread. 

A few things I want to recap from discussions 

1) AM64/AM24 does have a unique MAC ID per device that is programmed by our product engineering team (as highlighted by Rasty). This is predominantly used by ROM for ethernet port 0 , but can potentially be leveraged by customers too. Each customer has different preferences, some do not want this and provision their own using onboard flash or an on board EEPROM. 

2) It is unclear which value you read and saw it be same across all boards. If this is the MAC ID programmed by TI , then this should've been unique per device. Will need to debug that. 

3) If customers need more than the 1 MAC ID , or do not want to use the MAC ID in our OTP , they can a) use an onboard EEPROM b) use to program from the on board flash (which is what you are trying to do) c) use user configurable extended OTP to program  - you can find some helpful material on that on the following E2E FAQ

For now we will focus on b) assuming that is your preferred route.

I tested it on 3-4 boards, its not same for all boards.
