[FAQ] AM2434: Is TI EtherCAT solution in the Industrial Communications SDK compatible with RGMI ?

Part Number: AM2434
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869HM, LP-AM243, DP83869

Tool/software:

Is it NOT recommended to use RGMII for EtherCAT on AM243x?

On LP-AM243, RGMII is used to connect to PHY (DP83869HM), and RGMII is also used in the case of EtherCAT.

However, in Beckhoff's PHY selection guide and other E2E thread, RGMII and RMII are NOT recommended.

2 EtherCAT (100Mbit/s)
This chapter is about Ethernet PHYs used for Beckhoff ESCs which support EtherCAT only (not EtherCAT G).
For EtherCAT, the recommended interface is MII, since RMII/RGMII PHYs include TX FIFOs which increase
the forwarding delay of an EtherCAT slave device, as well as the forwarding jitter.

EtherCAT considers on the fly latency as KPI. RGMII introduces large MAC level latencies in 100M mode due to additional FIFOs required by the interface. Such a solution won't be competitive, EtherCAT also discourages use RMII due to latency concerns.
