AM263P4-Q1: I2C Fall Edge

Part Number: AM263P4-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

Please check the related thread first for context.

My customer has a follow-up question. Is there any issues if the fall edge timing is too fast?

Best regards,

Mari Tsunoda

  • Mari,

There are a few issues that may come up if the falling edge timing is too fast:

    1. Signal integrity - sharp falling edge can cause ringing or under/overshoot
    2. I2C Spec violation - I2C is open-drain with controlled rise and fall times. Your customer must ensure they are not violating I2C specs.
    3. Receiver misinterpretation - I2C receiving device(s) may misinterpret bits if the edge rate is too fast

You can avoid edges being too fast by using the proper pull-up resistor value on the I2C SDA/SCL nets (we recommend 4.7k). Another thing you can do is place series termination resistors near the controller to slow down edges that are too fast.

    Regards,

    Brennan
