TMS320F28335: operating temperature

Part Number: TMS320F28335

Tool/software:

Hi expert,

About the F28335 chip operating temperature is -40°C-85°C, the junction temperature is -40°C-150°C, now I test to run for a long time for 2 hours at 97°C can continue to work, may I ask which one of the working temperatures shall prevail?

Best Regards

  • Anka,

The Tj of 150C is absolute max the device can take, but is not where we should be operating normally.

For your question, we need to calculate the Tj of the device based on the Ambient temperature and the power consumed by the device; and using a formula we can derive Tj.  https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/spra953

These devices, don't specify a ROC Tj, but rather give a Ta that is supported for the different device grades.

Only the "A" version is limited to 85C Ta, both the "S" and "Q" versions can go up to 125C Ta.

For a given system, customer would need to evaluate the current consumption along with Tamb or Tcase and use the app note above in addition to the thermal metrics in the DS to derive Tj.

We definitely want to see Tj below 150C(I'm pretty sure that will be OK if your Tamb  = 97).  I think in this case we will also see Tj below 125C as well.

My only other comment, if customer is using the "A" device and they are in Tamb = 97, this is outside the DS spec and they need to switch devices to either "S" or "A" device.

    Best,

    Matthew
