MOTORWARE: Why doesn't anyone fix this???????

Part Number: MOTORWARE

I, like many others here, cannot get the MOTORWARE software package to work. It installs but when I launch it, I get nothing - no project pane - no nothing. It simply doens't pick up the structure as described in the documentation. I'm writing right now because I'm frustrated as hell. I simply wanted to QUICKLY evaluate the performance of the FOC software and some of the several features offered. I have now spent several hours trying install and uninstall software and reading user guides with no outcome. All documentation assumes this crappy piece of software will "just work".

I'm now at a point where I'm simply going to throw the EVBs in the bin and never look at instaSPIN again. If I'm getting stuck at this point in the process of evaluation, then I can only imagine how much time I'll be wasting as I dig deeper into things.

This is a sad outcome. Many others have reported the same issues and TI has done nothing at all about it. Get you sh!t together TI - you've just lost an opportunity to capture a large chunk of business.

  • HaniC,
Did you see the note on
    www.ti.com/.../motorware

*Note 1: If MotorWare.exe gives a "Java Runtime" error, you need to install Java from Oracle.com

My guess if you are having trouble getting the .exe to do anything, it is because you don't have Java on your system.

Also, the .exe just helps you navigate the content, it isn't required for use at all (but helpful IMO).

You can browse, and I recommend going to
    C:\ti\motorware\motorware_1_01_00_18\docs\labs\instaspin_labs.pdf

or up a couple levels if you want to start with Getting Started / Quick Start for your EVM
    C:\ti\motorware\motorware_1_01_00_18\docs\boards
  • Thanks for the reply. I appreciate you taking the time to write.

The .exe is launching - This is not the problem. I have Java installed. My issue is the same as Original Question which I linked from (and the same issue as many others have reported here).

All the documentation about getting started with instaSpin references motorware. As this simply does not work, I have to go spend hours reading forums and browsing up and down document paths, installing the dev suite etc etc just to get something to spin.

I am an experienced motor control engineer - I will get things to work eventually with or without motorware - That is not my concern. My biggest issue is that several people have reported the same issue and TI has taken ZERO action to attempt to fix it. It's not user error, it's a fundamental flaw in the software.

The whole quick evaluation/getting started ethos is no longer relevant. THIS IS MY ISSUE. Either fix the software OR change the documentation OR document somewhere how to "GET STARTED" in the event of crappy software not working. This is my feedback to TI.
  • HaniC,

Are you saying that when you run

    C:\ti\motorware\motorware_1_01_00_18\MotorWare.exe

you just get a Resource Explorer screen - without any of the actual MotorWare content - like is shown in some of the screenshots in the linked post?

I've never seen that or read that from any other user.

I would check that you have installed MotorWare in a default directory, and not in some odd location.

I will also say again that you don't HAVE to use MotorWare.exe to use MotorWare.  You do need the MotorWare projects (and documentation) to run InstaSPIN-FOC or InstaSPIN-MOTION projects.

Per my previous post I would just open the documentation directly and start on the proj_lab## examples.

  • Yes, only Resource Explorer screen - no content.

See all these posts.... It's clearly an issue:

    e2e.ti.com/.../707227
    e2e.ti.com/.../662764
    e2e.ti.com/.../707963
    e2e.ti.com/.../587245 [ Over a year ago!!! ]

There's many more if you search for them...

I don't need help getting things going. I made progress and successfully ran a bunch of labs outside of the motorware.exe. but that's not the point

I get it, it's not that critical but for someone unfamiliar with the platform like me, who's trying to follow some getting starting documentation to get things started, it's extremely frustrating when I can't follow instruction steps due to dodgy software. I'm extremely annoyed because the issue has been reported a bunch of times by others yet TI does nothing.

Look, my point is it should be a known issue and should either be fixed or documentation changed so that when it doesn't work newbies know where to go from there quickly without having to go from forum to document to Google just to get a demo running. I've know already wasted a bunch of time commenting here in addition to the time wasted getting started.
  • I'm not on this forum as much any longer, but I agree it looks like there is a pattern of issues that should have been documented and solution discussed and communicated. I'll discuss with the team.
  • Thank you.

I would imagine the last thing TI would want is for customers or prospective customers to have a terrible experience 5 minutes into exploring instaSPIN - it would detract from the awesomeness that I know instaSPIN is.

I've used TI product for years - just not to do with instaSPIN. The TI user experiance is usually better than this...
  • Thanks for pointing out that this is more than a one off issue.

Unfortunately so far the story is that we haven't been able to replicate and don't have a proven root cause or solution. We will keep investigating.
  • HaniC,

Are you able to use Resource Explorer in CCS? I've noticed that TIREX only works on my machine properly if I use the CCS offline installer. I assume that MotorWare is leveraging support files from CCS.

    -Tommy
  • Kind of... This is what I get from Resource Explorer Classic:

But it's quite the same as what's documented (eg. What I would of seen if Motorware.exe was working) according to the documentation.

There is nothing instaSPIN related available in Resource Explorer.
