TMS320F28379D: External eQEP alternative

Dear TI Forum,

I have a question regarding an external alternative for the eQEP modules of the TMS320F28379D. As I want to control 4 motors with quadrature encoders, the TMS320F28379D lacks one eQEP module.

So, could you please recommend me a device (small footprint of great importance), that can perform the task of the eQEP module?

It would be nice, if this device could count the encoder signals and output the amount of counts to the TMS320F28379D.

So far, I could find this component SN74LV163A. Am I right, that this part can do the task?

The maximum QEP number is three in the existing C2000 controllers, you might use two c2000 controllers to implement such requirement, C2000 controller has one, two or three QEP modules. That may be more easy to meet your requirements than using SN74LV163A that doesn't have full functions as QEP module.

Adding a second MCU to the system is what I want to avoid. The motion control system has to be as small as possible.

You might use eCAP or CLB modules to simulate the QEP if you are using the F28379D, though there is no such reference design to be released. Or add a QEP interface IC to get the encoder for the MCU controller.

I found an interface IC from iC-Haus. They are much smaller than the SN74LV163A, but I still prefer the solution using a second MCU (Piccolo).

But thanks for the tip using "eCAP or CLB modules to simulate the QEP"

Good. Please let me know if you have any further question. C2000 will have a reference to support additional more QEP modules with CLB, please keep looking at C2000 website. Thanks.
