TMS320F280048: FW Update Capability

Dear Experts,

could You please help with the following questions:

Setup:

On-Board-Charger application

1x F28004x on cold side

1x F28004x on hot side

Needs:

1. high-speed communication for control between uC1 and uC2 (isolated)

2. FW update capabiltiy in the field of both uCs

Questions:

I can only think of the FSI or SPI in high-speed mode configuration.

Is there a way to use FSI for FW update? The boot-mode only supports SPI, so I do not think so. Can You confirm?

Or are there any other ways to get the high communication speed of FSI and FW update capability at the same time over one interface w/o the need for additional isolation devices.

FSI is the optimal solution for the isolation communication line. However I dont believe it has FW update capability.

thank You for reply. Could You please confirm, that FSI can not be used for FW update?

If not then I guess SPI would make most sense, since it can be used for FW update (via SPI boot) and achieves highest throughput in high-speed mode compared to the other periperhals allowing FW update.

Hello Nima, Kevin,

another option I could think of would be to use a custom secondary boot-loader using a bootstrap mechanism.

Store custom secondary bootloader in a fixed flash sector (min sector size of 8kB granularity), which is programmed once during manufacturing
- This secondary bootloader flash sector is not allowed to be erased, thus minimum 8kB less flash memory available for application image
ROM boot loader boots to flash address of the secondary bootloader
Secondary bootloader can then initialize and use any interface to load/flash application image to the other remaining flash sectors

This would be also a valid option, correct?

Yes that is basically implementing a custom one.
