MSP430FR5043:msp430 memory flashing error

Part Number: MSP430FR5043
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET, EVM430-FR6043

Tools/Software:

First, here's where the problem starts:

MSP430: Emulator initialization error: One of the connected MSP-FET/eZ-FET debuggers needs to be repaired. Select 'Repair' to start the repair process. Note: Only one MSP-FET/eZ-FET debugger can be connected to the system during the repair process. MSP430: Error: MSP-FET/eZ-FET repair failed

To solve the above problem I bought a new MSP-FET programmer and went through the process again but the problem is still the same.

Initially I was using version 11.0.0.00012 but it is no longer supported so I tried to flash it again to version 12.8.1 and got the following problem:

When I clicked on Detect My Board in View -> Resource Explorer, I got the following error message:

{"msg":"HID_FET: Could not retrieve FET HW version on ( 0: Internal error).","name":"HID_FET","type":"error"}

I read and tried the suggestion to run Program MSP430 (example).bat in another thread, but I still have the same problem.

It seems like the board is not detected because the initial problem was not solved. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks

  • Hi Jang,

Does it show below information when you connect the MSP-FET to PC?

If not, this means there has some error between the hardware connection, or the firmware is broken.

By the way, what PC OS you are using: Window 10, Window11, Linux, Mac...?

  • Hi, Sal Ye
    I have 3 PCs running Windows 11.
Only one of them was recognized in August of last year. When I connected the port, the port name was shown as COM6 and I checked that it was added.

But when I tried again, both of my programmers are not recognized in the port.
One of the two is the one I used in August and the other is a new one.
    Thank you.

  • Hi Jang,

Got it, let me try it aslo in my side. [MSP-FET+CCS12.8.1]

But when I tried again, both of my programmers are not recognized in the port.

Maybe you can try restart the PC, or plug in the debugger directly with PC (without the docker).

What I think it that the firmware is broken when you do upgrade. Then there is no avaiable HID interface to PC.

Maybe there requires some special firmware update method. Let me try some guidance here if could do.

  • Hey Jang,

I find some description in the debugger UG:https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau647o/slau647o.pdf

You can find the cold boot to enable the default code and establish the HID connect with PC:

  • I stripped the wires and followed the protocol since I didn't have a jumper cap that fit the specs. Unfortunately, the repair was not successful. If there is something wrong with the steps I followed, please let me know. Thanks.
    1. Disassemble the case.
    2. Connect the two holes of the circuit in the J2 section with copper wire.
    3. Power using USB.
    4. Check if the LED is on and remove the copper wire.
    5. Repair in ccs. (I tried the repair without removing the copper wire.)

I tried the repair button in the identify of the new project window in ccs.

  • Hi Jang,

    That looks good.

So, is the repair window shows up? If so, maybe you can use an older IDE version to see whether it works.

  • I tried using an older IDE version to see if it worked, but I still got the following message:
MSP430: Emulator initialization error: One of the connected MSP-FET/eZ-FET debuggers needs to be repaired. Select 'Repair' to start the repair process. Note: Only one MSP-FET/eZ-FET debugger can be connected to the system during the repair process. MSP430: Error: MSP-FET/eZ-FET repair failed
Also, the device manager window in Windows 11 still does not recognize the port.

I tried replacing the PC, deleting and reinstalling all the CCS-related programs, and resetting the programmer.
I think I did not follow the solution properly.
If there was a video or more detailed explanation of the solution you suggested, it would be helpful. Thank you.

  • Hi JANG,

That is weird. What I can try is to use the CCS 12.8.1 with MSP-FET to flash a device and see is there any error shows up.

By the way, is your PC has any encrption software which might break the CCS or something else. If it does have, maybe you can try it by your personal PC.

  • Hi JANG,

I used the CCS12.8.1 with MSP-FET to debug EVM430-FR6043, and it works normal.

The steps you showed here is good.

    What I can suggest is:

    1. Please disconnect the copper before repair in ccs.

    5. Repair in ccs. (I tried the repair without removing the copper wire.)

    2. Try another PC and install the CCS

  • It failed on my personal laptop at home. I will try again on my desktop PC and let you know the results. Thanks.

  • Hi JANG,

If it failed, I do not have other recommendation.

I see you just brought a new FET here, maybe you can contact your vendor to support the new one.
