MSP430F1232: MSP-GANg Programmer communication Err 308

Tool/software:

We have a very old "MSP430 GANG PROGRAMMER",  try to use it programming some old design board for production, and find the GAND PROGRAMMER fails on ERROR 308 communication.

I check the signal at the COM port RX/TX,  PC transmitting RS232 signal at +9V/-8V, GANG PROGRAMMER reply RS232 signal at +7V/-5V level.

The data captured:

     PC Tx packet data:  0D0D0D0D0D0D0D0D0DF2F8FAF2F2F2F2FAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

     GANG PROGRAMMER: reply data: FEFEFEFEFEFEFEFEFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

It seems the hardware is functional, because it can reply  PC Tx packet. I check the PCB and seems nothing wrong.

Is the M430F149 MCU in the GANG PROGRAMMER with obsoleted firmware?  Is it possible to update the firmware via MSP-FET430UIF?

    Hello Rabbit,

    In the past, were you able to program MSP430F149 using this same MSP-GANG? Or is this the first time?

    Let me do some research on which version of firmware is needed to support the MSP430F149.

    Yes, it is possible to use the MSP-FET430UIF to program the MSP430F149 instead of the MSP-GANG

    Hi Dennis,

    The "MSP430 GANG PROGRAMMER" can programming MSP430F149, my colleague told me it works, and I find a very old V1.57 version software in the very old archive, install it to my windows 10, it can program the MSP430F149 flash. But I still have questions:

    1. V1.57 very old, try to download updated from  https://www.ti.com/tool/download/MSP-GANG-SOFTWARE; the latest version V1.3.9 and the old version V1.02.05,  both report Err308 at Win10. Any of the released version can work at Win10 for "MSP430 GANG PROGRAMMER"?

    2. During using V1.57 software, I accidentally enabled the option "Device secured", some of the boards can't be programmed,  I can't erase the secure protection by V1.57. Do you know how to erase the secure setting by other tool?

    I am sincerely sorry about not seeing your response and question.  My last post this set to "TI thinks resolved", and your response 3 days later should have  appeared in my system but did not.  Today by chance, while searching for another posting, I found your post.  I'm looking back through our Audit trail to see what went wrong.  Again, please accept my apologies.

    The GANG programmer is actually built by Elprotronics.  They would have better knowledge of the "older" firmware and can answer why you see these errors when attempting to download a later version.  I would recommend reaching out to them with your questions about the firmware.

    For the question on Device Secured, once the JTAG fuse has been enabled (blown), there is no way to recover the device.  The device is disabled permanently.  See section 5.31 in the User Guide.
