Trying to address the warning about floating-point operations as in this query: the project I'm trying to adapt uses a lot of them. I looked at the user guide but I think it was written for an earlier version of CCS than I have (12.8.1): I have no drop-down menu for Application Binary Interface as on page 3 of the guide.

Yes, according to the PDF:
using Code Composer Studio
IDE version 5.3.0.00090, MSP430 compiler version 4.1.5,
These are very old versions of the tools.
You can get CCS 5.3.0 from: https://www.ti.com/tool/download/CCSTUDIO/5.3.0.00090
It likely comes with the old version of the compiler you need.
