MSP430FR6047: Digital Filtering plus rolling average

I am looking for input on how to design a digital filter for a Water flow meter, that I am working on. The raw data is inherently noisy which is expected, but I'm not sure where to put the filter. The loop where the data can be read out of the VFR variable "&algResults.volumeFlowRate" is once every 1 second in the demo code for the USS library, and it takes some time in milisecond to generate each time of flight calculation. From how I understand the algorithm I'm not sure that I can gather enough data points in a in the time cycle that I am looking to have filter data by (Between 250ms - 500ms) to create a solid filter. Is there another variable/location in that I should be looking at outside of the "&algResults.volumeFlowRate" variable?
