Unable to prgramm MSP430F2001 with the MSP-FET430UIF programmer

Hello everyone

I am new to TI's microcontroller and need some help  getting started. 

I have a MSP430F2001 microcontroller on a custom board which I made. The pinout of the target connector is the same as Figure B-66. MSP-FET430UIF USB Interface, Schematic (2 of 4) , page 136, SLAU278J. Except the Reset I dont have connected. The power supply is meant to be supplied by the MSP-FET430UIF programmer.

On the PC, I downloaded the latest version of Code composer Studio Version: 5.2.1.00018. When I first connected the MSP-FET430UIF with computer it made a firmware update. In CCS, I opened the demo project MSP430 Blink the LED Demo - Software Toggle P1.0. I am trying to download this code to my target. In order to download I press the "Debug" and then the error message pops up : 

MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device

Ok, that's it. Can someone help me to solve this problem.

    Hello Reto,

    please give us a screenshot of your schematic, including all that is nessecary for programming and debuging as well as reset.

    First of all, the Page 136 in slau278j shows the programmer itself. So for your target every pin direction is mirrored.

    Please see Page 36 in the same document for simple target programming and debuging environment.

    Hi Frank

    Your response did already solve the problem. I was missing to connect the reset line to the target connector that is why it did not work.

    Because I did not realize that on page 136 it is the programmer itself I thought I don't need the reset.

    Now programming works just fine. Problem solved.
