I just noticed that there is a new product out, the MSP-FET. Which programming tools support it? I need a programming-only environment. Up until now I've used the MSP-FET430UIF with either the MSPFlash command-line tool or the FET-Pro430 from Elpotronics. Do those tools support the new MSP-FET hardware?
Thanks,
Scott
Scott,
it depends on the underlaying MSP430 Debug Stack/MSP430 DLL which the software tool is using. MSP-FET is supported by the MSP430 v3 DLL starting from v3.4.0.20:
http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack#Releases
The newest MSP430Flasher v.1.3.1 is using MSP430 DLL v3.4.1.0 (even a newer version):
http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_Flasher_-_Command_Line_Programmer#Releases
So it should be ok to use the MSP-FET with it.
Hi Leo,
Where should I look for that file on my PC, so that I can see which version is there?
Thanks,
Scott
Scott,
you can go into the installation directory of your software tools (MSp430Flasher, CCS, IAR, Elprotronic), and try to search for a file with the name MSP430.DLL. The in windows explorer click to select the file, and the info shall be displayed as follows:
Looks like version 3.4.1.0. Thank you for the pointer. Now I need to figure out why my old MSP-FET430UIF isn't working. When prompted by the Elpotronic tool to update the firmware, I said yes, and then it sat at the "erasing firmware" step for 15 minutes, red and green LEDs alternately flashing on the 430UIF, until I gave up and killed the process. The 430UIF still is recognized as a USB device, but when I try to use the Elpotronic application to talk to it, such as by querying its firmware version, the application hangs and I have to kill it using Task Manager. Trying to update firmware using MSPFlasher, which also prompted me to update, the same behavior results, i.e. erasing forever and flashing red and green LEDs. I'm afraid I've bricked the 430UIF. Is there a recovery method?
Thanks,
Scott
Scott,
if the MSP-FEP430UIF gets bricked, it is hard to recover it. You can try to search the forum or google to find out what people have tried before.
Anyway this kind of issue should not appear in the new MSP-FET, i.s. it should be possible to recover the device.
