[SOLVED] MSP430 Launchpad cannot program G2553

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2553, ENERGIA

Few days ago,  i wanted to power my breadboard circuit from the Launchpad. From that day on, whenever i plug launchpad on USB with MSP430G2553 mcu, red and green led stay very dimmed and when i try to program the chip (either with IAR or with Energia) it says that device cannot be found. On Windows device manager, i can see the launchpad getting assigned to COM port. If i switch the mcu with G2452, everything works fine. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? Should i replace my launchpad with a new one or can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Your G2553 is toast or inserted backwards.

  • You could also try the following steps.

    (1) Power down your PC.

    (2) Plug G2553 to the socket on the LP board.

    (3) Check all the jumpers on the LP board.

    (4) Plug LP to a USB port.

    (5) Power up the PC.

If this still does not work. You may try a different USB on your PC. But you must use steps (1), (4), and (5) again in that order.

  • If you can program your G2452 with the launchpad, but the G2553 not I would not change the launchpad - it seems as if the micro is damaged. At least the programming pins since there seems to be some activity - the "dimmed" LEDs could be a PWM for example, or just toggling. First I would try another G2553.

  • I have tested several g2553 with the same result. Also tried this specific g2553 on another launchpad and it works just fine. I also have tried this lauchpad on another pc with the same result.
I will try old_yellow_cow method and i will give you the results.
  • So, two days ago, i removed g2553 and programmed it several times on another launchpad and re-inserted it on the "broken" one. I also removed all of the jumpers. Plugged it to pc, removed it. Put back Vcc jumper. Plug to pc, remove, put the other jumper etc and started working just fine.
Thank you all for your help!
