MSP-FET (MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR5989, MSP-FET

Hi,

I have a MSP430FR5989 and I am using MSP-FET and CCS (v6.1.2.) to program and debug it. When I tried to debug "Blink The LED" in the Project templates, I then saw the message "Error connecting to the target: Unknown device." I have searched through the forum and checked most of the threads related to the same issue. I already made sure my JTAG connection is correct (2-Wire, local supply, Vcc Tool left open, correct R1-47kohm and C1-2.2nF). Therefore, I suspect that it's the software that's not working properly. There are some specific questions I have which I think can possible answer why it doesn't work:

1. I am using a Mac OS X El Capitan. Most Mac users said that they can use MSP-FET with no problem. Can I assume that my OS should not be the cause of the problem? (I can switch to PC, but I prefer Mac)

2. Do I need to install any MSP-FET USB driver? When I plug in the USB port, nothing really popped up and told me to install a USB driver. By the way, my Mac can detect the following:

3. Should I configure anything on CCS so it can recognize my device? I tried all Connection configurations (Project →  Properties →  General →  Device →  Connection.) and they didn't work. Since Is there any suggestion on how I should configure my CCS?

4. One thing I found odd on the JTAG interface is that pin1 on JTAG (TDO/TDI on JTAG or RST on MSP430) appears to be at 2.12V. Is this expected?

I will update my schematic as soon as possible, but for your information, on my MSP430FR5989, DVCC1,DVCC2,DVCC3,ESIDVCC are powered by the same 3.3V supply, AVCC is powered by a different 3.3V supply (powered up at the same time). DVSS1,DVSS2,DVSS3,ESIDVSS,AVSS1,AVSS2,AVSS3 are all connected to the same ground. I do have two pairs of decoupling capacitors (100nF and 1uF) for AVCC and DVCC. JTAG, power supply, and ground supply are about the only things I connect on my MSP430FR5989.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Regards,

Michael

  • Michael,

In general the errors that say "unknown device" are due to the fact the MSP430 Emulators package is not up to date - i.e., the package does not support your device.

Therefore I ask: were you able to connect to this particular device before? Perhaps on a development kit?

One additional detail: CCSv6.1.2 for Mac OSX is a Beta version and the recommended version to be used is CCSv6.1.3 that is a complete release. Also, CCSv6.2.0 is soon to be released (this week or next) and therefore you can potentially wait a bit longer to get the absolute latest.

In any case, I will move this thread also to the MSP forum as the experts there will be much more knowledgeable about the intrinsic details of the device and its JTAG connections.

    Hope this helps,
    Rafael
  • Hi Rafael,

Thanks for replying to me. To answer your question: This is my first time trying to connect this device, so I have never connected the device before.

Based on your information, you are saying my MSP-FET does not recognize MSP430. In addition, the fact that my MSP-FET LED shows the following,

it is probably indicating that CCS v6.1.2 is able to connect to Mac OSX. Therefore, can I assume the reason why I see the error is because the connection between MSP-FET and MSP430 is problematic? Perhaps my MSP430 is damaged because of the lack of ESD protection (I use my bare hands and conductive tweezer to handle the device).

Thank you for moving to the right forum. Before I get more help from MSP experts, I will try the following:

    1. Try a new MSP430 and handle it carefully (through the use of ESD protection wrist strap)

    2. Try CCS v6.1.3 and CCS v6.2.0 (as soon as it's available)

    3. Try it on Windows

I will update the results as soon as I have them.

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Michael,
I am going to close this thread, but you are still welcome to post your findings here.

    Thanks and Regards,
