MSP432P401R: Board is getting heated .

Part Number: MSP432P401R

We are participating in the IICDC competition 2017-18 sponsored by TI. We are using MSP432 board for our project. The MSP432 IC is getting heated while the code is being executed on the board. The 3.3v on the board is shorted with the ground pin.

Kindly help us out with the issue as we need to submit the product demo on 26th February,2018.

  • Amey,

It sounds like either there is a jumper that is shorting 3.3v to GND, or the board has been damaged.

If the jumpers are still in the positions they were in when you openeded the box (see the first figure in the MSP432 LaunchPad User Guide), then the board is damaged and you'll need to replace it.  The fastest way to get this done is to contact the contest organizer in this case.  From the IICDC web site, that address is: ti-india-dc@list.ti.com.

    Regards,

      Bob L.

  • Hi Mr. Amey,

What is the color of the launchpad that you are using?
If this is the Black one, this may get damaged by simply touching the capacitor near the upper rightmost of the launchpad with hand while it operates. This is located near the LDO at the edge of the board.

Other reason maybe the interfacing, the node must not be drawing a lot of current from the I/O pins.
An effective voltage level translation must be placed before the driven circuit. Let us say the sensor operates in +5 Volts DC.
The sourcing and sinking current of MSP432 is not sufficient alone driving multiple node of driven circuit.
This may lead to excessive heating. This is written on page 42-43 of the MSP432 Datasheet.
See the remarks (1), (2) in page 43.

    Goodluck and Best Regards,
    Leo
