CCS/MSP430G2553: Can one debug while configured for hardware UART on g2553 launchpad?

Hi,

I've searched and haven't found a definitive answer to this question. I have a working program which outputs ascii through UART, on ports 1.1 and 1.2.

I have configured the jumpers on the launchpad to use hardware UART, and have managed to see output in the CCS terminal window.

However, I lose connectivity with the FET configured this way, meaning I can no longer update or debug code. I've tried numerous combinations of COM ports, but still no joy.

Am I missing something really obvious?

Hi mh,
Do you have your Test and RST jumpers set?

I did a quick test with CCS7 and it worked for me.

Hey Cameron -- yep, only diff there is RX and TX jumpers between tries. Disconnected or configured for software UART, everything's good.

You could also try this with a 3rd party Terminal, like Teraterm.

With software emulation, that was what I had to do, and have no issue. With hardware UART configured, the issue isn't that I am not getting output in the terminal-- it is that the FET is no longer recognized, and that is even if no terminal is connected to the COM port...

It sounds like the FET is somehow becoming disconnected. I'd check your jumpers for the FET. Will the board program with the UART jumpers in HW position?

No- that is precisely the issue. In HW config, the fet becomes unreachable for CCS (even as I see output in its terminal from the program I managed to flash while not in HW uart configuration).

This may seem obvious, but are you by chance rearranging the RST and TEST jumpers when configuring for Hardware UART? Only the TXD and RXD jumpers should be rotated.

No, I am 100% sure that the jumper configuration is correct.

Hi mh,
I did some more digging and it turns out this is a Windows driver issue. Occasionally, physically disconnecting and reconnecting will fix the issue, but not always. We are working on a fix for this .

Eeeeeeh, so is there a workaround in the meantime? I have connected and disconnected numerous times without sucess.

Would installing CCS8 reinstall drivers etc? Can I uninstall and reinstall them?

I cant guarantee it will work, but I'm using CCS7.2 and I'm able to communicate with the device while debugging. I've been told that this same device may not work tomorrow though.

I'm still asking around, in case someone else has found a fix. :-)
This could be an issue that was fixed in later versions of CCS, but I was unaware of it until today.

You arent by chance using a hub or a USB3.0 port are you? That can throw a wrench into things occaiionally.

One more thing, that you may have already tried: Program the device with the UART jumpers removed then replace them once the device is in debug.

I _think_ I tried that, and then, I was unable to open the serial port from the terminal. I'll give it another spin to confirm.

It's USB 2, straight into the computer.
