CCS/MSP432E401Y: Jlink+ SWD to debug MSP432

Part Number: MSP432E401Y
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP432E401Y, , SEGGER

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Just got a couple of these boards in, and am beginning early evaluations. Have been referring to the board's User's Guide:

SLAU748A–October 2017–Revised July 2018

SimpleLinkTM Ethernet MSP432E401Y Microcontroller LaunchPadTM Development Kit (MSP-EXP432E401Y)

A noob to J-Link, I've been diligently following:

Section 2.3.2: External Debugger

The connector J11 is provided for the attachment of an external debug adapter such as the IAR I-Jet, Segger J-Link or Keil® ULINK. This connector follows the Arm 10-pin mini JTAG pinout. To use an external debugger, make sure the TDI, TDO, TCK, TMS, RST, and 3V3 jumpers are disconnected from J101.

...and have been having all sorts of cannot connect to board kinds of errors, as others here are reporting on the MSP432.

Simple Fix! The 3V3 jumper must remain connected - then the debugger works great! (Now I simply have to study a bit more about how to use it effectively.

Guys, please fix this documentation. I know all of this is probably obvious to the majority of you, but I rely on those documents to be spot-on, perfect - as I am not smart enough to second-guess you guys! A lot of time wasted, unnecessarily, on this.

  • THank you for pointing this out. I will make the tools folks aware of this.

    Chris
  • The documentation has been updated.

The removal of the 3V3 jumper will depend if the external debugger supplies power or simply senses power. In the case that the debugger senses power, then the 3V3 can remain or be removed as long as the 3V rail is supplied by another source. If the debugger does supply a 3V rail then the 3V3 jumper should be removed to prevent contention between the supplies on the launchpad and the debugger.

    Regards,
    Chris
