CCS/MSP430FR2355: Flashing a Code gives an Error and asks for a Firmware Update

Part Number: MSP430FR2355

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I have two MSP430 boards where I see the following error when I flash a code (any code - we tried the basic blinking LED example as well):

One of the devices has been used only once before and it worked fine then. The other device has been in use for a couple of months now and was working fine until now.

When i try to update, it seems to be updating but returns to the same error again. The debug probe becomes pretty hot very quickly.

I tried to see if other people had similar issues - one person said that they didn't use the device for 4 days and it worked after that. That hasn't worked for me. The other person said that it was an issue with soldering the on the evaluation board - in that case may I ask for a replacement please?

Please let me know how I may proceed with this.

Thanks,

Yaman

  • Hello Yaman,

When you say it becomes pretty hot very quickly, something is wrong.
Are you using an MSPFET-430 programmer or a MSP430FR2355 Launchpad?

If you are using MSPFET-430 programmer, disconnect the ribbon cable from the target MCU board and see if you can attempt to update again without it getting hot. If it works, there is something shorted on your target PCB.

If the MSPFET-430 still gets hot without connected to your target MCU, then it is defective.

If you are using MSP430FR2355 Launchpad, check that you don't have any jumpers connected incorrectly and disconnect anything else that is connected to the Launchpad. I would suggest removing all the connectors on the Launchpad and attempt to update the programming firmware.
If the Launchpad still gets hot then there is a short.

Let me know what you discover.
  • Hi Dennis,

I'm using the MSP430FR2355 Launchpad. I checked all the jumpers and made sure none of them were connected incorrectly. I also removed any of the jumpers that were not required. Here's a picture of the board when I tried to flash a code:

It prompted me to update firmware which I did but then game me an error that said: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device.

Every time I try to flash something, I see the same error. The debug probe still become hot.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do on my end.

    Thanks,

    Yaman

  • Ok, sounds like MSP430FR2355 went bad for some reason. When and where did you purchase this Launchpad?
  • Hi Dennis,

We bought the device from Digikey and the order was places on the 29th of January. I can send you information on the code on the back of the device if that'd be helpful. It was used once, right after we opened it and we haven't been able to use it since.

    Thanks,

    Yaman

  • Ok, that shouldn't be a problem. Check the Digikey website for returns. I believe you need to request an RMA (return material authorization) with your customer information. There is even an on-line CHAT if you want to ask that person the specific steps needed for your return.
  • Hi Dennis,

That sounds good, I'll go ahead and check with them on this.

    Thanks,

    Yaman

  • I'll go ahead and mark this issue resolved, but if you need further assistance with this issue, feel free to re-open.
  • Sure, thanks Dennis!
