DRV8434SEVM: EVM recommended current draw

Part Number: DRV8434SEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8434S, , DRV8711

Hello, I am operating a DRV8434SEVM at 48V and have noticed that the DRV8434S IC is quite warm measuring greater than 140F when the H-bridge is off (Thermal Imaging camera used for temperature measurement).  The external 48V power supply indicates a current draw of 20 milliamp when the EVM is in this state.  The device is set to latch all faults other than Stall and none of the Fault indicators are indicating any issue when SPI is active.

Can you advise if these observed conditions are considered normal and the EVM can be continued to be used.

Thank you.

  • Hello!

This is definitely not expected behavior.  I also would not recommend running the device continuously at the recommended max. voltage.  It appears you  have damaged the device.  Does it spin a motor?

If you need to run at 48V, I would suggest considering a device with some margin like the DRV8711.

    Regards,

    Ryan

  • Ryan, thanks for the reply.  The EVM will spin a motor although the motion is inconsistent.

Can you elaborate further or contact me as regards the advice on the 48V.

  • Hello again,

If the abs. max is exceeded, 50V, damage will occur to the device.  There is not much margin at 48V unless the supply is very tightly regulated.

    Regards,

    Ryan
