DRV8308: Alternate part with Integrated Commutation from Hall Sensors

Part Number: DRV8308
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8306, DRV10970, MCT8316Z, DRV832X, DRV8300, DRV8353

Hi Team,

Can you suggest an alternative for DRV8308 Integrated Commutation from Hall Sensors? I checked the product list but the only device I could find was DRV8306. However, this is also out of stock.

Do you know any similar parts?

Thank you.

Regards,

Marvin

  • Hi Marvin!

Based on the two ICs you’ve looked into, it looks like the customer will be operating somewhere in the range of 5-40V. Both of those drivers do not have internal FETs.

    • To clarify, what is the desired operating voltage?
    • How much current will be necessary to drive the motors? Are integrated FETs an option?
    • Both ICs are 1x PWM drive. Will any other drive fit the application?

Consider looking into DRV10970 if internal FETs are acceptable. This IC offers a similar minimum voltage requirement and supports 3A peak output current.

MCT8316Z also has internal FETs and operates in a similar voltage range with an 8A peak output current.

Let me know if this helps! Any additional information on the application would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the help. Here's more information from the customer:

    1. The operating voltage from Makita battery range from 18V to 21V typically and is looking for more than 30V.
    2. The current range for Minimum 50A BLDC motor.
    3. It is okay to have either 1xPWM or 3xPWM or 6xPWM.
    4. The driver IC's must have hall sensor interface, but if not it should pe possible to connect directly to microcontroller.

Integrated MOSFET solution is not suitable and MCT8316 cannot be used in the application

  • Hi Marvin!

Thanks so much for providing more information!

Based on your response, the DRV832x lineup looks like a good option. Below is a quick overview of the part:

    • 65V abs. max
    • 1A peak gate current drive
    • 1x, 3x, and 6x PWM control
    • Hardware, SPI, and I2C options
    • CSA and Buck converter options

The DRV834x is another option. It’s automotive grade which will increase the price. Very similar specs to the previously mentioned driver:

    • 65V abs max
    • 1A peak gate current drive
    • 1x, 3x, and 6x PWM control
    • Hardware, SPI, and I2C options
    • CSA option

The 1x, 3x, or 6x PWM operation opens up a lot of our portfolio. Below is a list of parts that could fit the customer’s application:

    • DRV8300
    • DRV8353
    • DRV8604 (40V abs max)

Let me know if you need any more assistance!
