DRV8844: Motor driver redundancy

Hi Team,

Can you please suggest few design inputs to plan for redundancy for DRV8844 motor driver, used to drive DC motors in a rover kit?

Our customer is connecting two battery operated motor to one DRV8844 motor driver, all together they are using 3 driver to drive 6 battery operated motors. His concern is if a driver fails, is there any alternate option to run the motors?

Hey Danilo,

Can the customer use a back up driver to kick in if they detect a driver failing? Having a reserve driver for emergency situations?

One more backup driver for all three driver is ok?

Do we need to control that backup driver by separate PWM pins from microcontroller?

Hey Mangala,

It might be better to have a backup for each driver for protection.

You can have the same PWM from microcontroller control the back up. It is up to you if you would like to have a separate MCU for redundancy.
