DRV8317: AVDD to power a microcontroller pre nSLEEP GPIO availability

Part Number: DRV8317

I would like to use the 8317's 3v3 AVDD line to power a microcontroller such that I can just supply motor power to the board without requiring a separate line or regulator for 3v3.

From my understanding of the datasheet, nSLEEP must be brought high in order to bring the 8317 out of sleep and enable the AVDD LDO, but nSLEEP is controlled by GPIO on the micro and is therefore not accessible yet.

Is there a suggested approach to getting AVDD active to chicken/egg the micro awake, ideally without additional components, or is this the intended behavior?

  • Hi David,

An approach that will lead to the least number of additional components would be to use a resistor divider from VM to keep nsleep high. This does come with the caveat that you will not be able to put the device to sleeps since nsleep would be held high at all times.
