Hello, this is the first time I am trying to design a motor controller to drive two Brushed DC motor, 5A Peak current each, with voltage, current, temperature and shoot-through protection, and dual-quadrature encoder for position feedback.

I need some assistance with selecting a general purpose Microcontroller that has UART interface and can perform control operation based on the position and error feedback. I am trying to determine between TI MSP430 and C2000 series. Appreciate your direction which controller would work sufficiently with DRV8873 integrated Driver (or other similar driver) that require minimum component count.

Is there any recommended reference design that use DRV8873 or similar?

I believe a C2000 device would be better since you need a dual-quadrature encoder. I'll move the thread over to them.

Hello Nasim,

I would like to recommend the TMS320F280025 in the C2000 series, which contains 2 EQEP module, and various communication peripherals. For the reference design, you can leverage the universal motor control lab in C2000Ware-MotorControl-SDK, which uses the TMS320F280025 with the device from the DRV family to control PM motor and BLDC motor.
