DRV8256: DRV8256 schematic

We are designing motor circuits using the DRV8256. Which circuit should I use: high-side or low-side to measure the current flowing through the motor using a 0.051 Ω sense resistor and incorporate it into the ADC? If you have a sample circuit, please send it.

Hey Suzuki-san,

DRV8256 has integrated current sense. Do you still wish to implement this externally? What application are you trying to achieve?

I am attaching a schematic of our DRV8251EVM that has external amplifier.

The DRV8251 has an Isens pin, but the DRV8256 has an internal Isens pin. The DRV8251 does not have enough output 4A current.

The application I want to do is to monitor the current flowing through the motor.

DRV8251 can support upto 4.1A. Does that not work?

Hey Suzuki-san,

So if you use DRV8256 in the manner of DRV8251 then you will have to ensure that the voltage drop across the resisotr does not exceed the Abs Min ratings of this device.

This is explained in the DRV8210 DS (9.2.4.2 Detailed Design Procedure).

Another method you can use is to add an in-line current sense on the driver output.

Also you could try an use devices such as DRV8873 and DRV8243-Q1 with Ipropi pins to measure proportional current.
