DRV8832-Q1: can it support this spec for E-shutter

Part Number: DRV8832-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8210, , DRV8832, DRV8231A

Hi Sir,

May I know if the DRV8832-Q1 or DRV8210 can support this spec for E-shutter?

  • Hello,

    I have a few questions:

    1. Is voltage regulation needed in your design? If not, the DRV8210 will be the best option. Otherwise, the DRV8832-Q1 is the only choice.
    2. What is the power supply (VM) and logic supply (VCC) requirement?

Looks like the shutter opens and closes by flipping the polarity across its terminals. Phase/Enable (PH/EN) control interface is better for driving the shutter. Toggling the PH pin while EN is always HIGH will allow to open and close the shutter. PH/EN control is only available in the DRV8210 which is the reason I recommend it.

Let me know if you have questions regarding any of the two devices.

  • Hi Sir,

    1. Is voltage regulation needed in your design? => don't need the voltage regulation, but they need the constant current control function and their MCU only have GPIO pin, not support the ADC function.

    2. What is the power supply (VM) and logic supply (VCC) requirement? => VM is 5V, Vcc is 3.3V.

  • Hi Henry,

In that case, the DRV8210 will work but it does not have current regulation built in. But there is a way to have current regulation without the need of ADC. The diagram below shows the current amplifier going to the MCU ADC. Another alternative is to connect the output of the amplifier to a comparator with an external VREF corresponding to the current limit threshold. Then the output of the comparator is fed back to one of the INx pins to create a closed loop control.

  • Hi Sir,

The customer want to use the DRV8832 which has the current sensing function.

May I know if there have another motor driver device that can meet the customer's request?

Could you please review the schematics is available or not?

  • Hi Henry,

The schematic looks good. My only recommendation is to add a 0.1µF capacitor in the VCC line.

May I know if there have another motor driver device that can meet the customer's request?

Another alternative driver, in case your customer is not happy with the DRV8832, is the DRV8231A with 4.5V-35V supply. This device comes with integrated current sensing.

  • Hi Sir,

Thank you for your advice. The customer will use DRV8231A for this request.
