We are thinking of operating the MC8316ZR as follow:

-PWM always 100% duty cycle (PWM = '1')
-Ilim will be connected to DAC (tolerance: AVDD/2 to (AVDD/2 - 0.4))

The motor will be controlled be changing the Ilim voltage level by the DAC.

Is that operating mode can be done ?

Hi Ranny,

This operation mode can be done. Adjusting the voltage at the ILIM pin with a DAC to control the motor current limit while the motor is spinning should not cause any issues.

In that case, when the Ilim is controlled by DAC, what is the minimum current that can be driven to the motor?
Can I get 4mA ?
Is resolution of 4mA can be supported (4mA, 8mA, 12mA, 16mA….2A) ?

Hi Rannan,

The ILIM pin should be able to support any DAC resolution. The MCT8316Z uses an analog comparator, which takes the internal CSA outputs and the voltage on the ILIM pin as inputs to set the cycle-by-cycle current limit. Due to the use of this analog comparator, the current limit is analog and can be set to any current level within the range AVDD/2 to AVDD/2-0.4V.
