MCF8329EVM: Continuous Space Vector Modulation

Part Number: MCF8329EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORSTUDIO, , MCF8329A, MCF8316A

In the MotorStudio software for the MCF8329EVM, Continuous Space Vector Modulation enable is grayed out.  I also don't see it mentioned in the datasheet.  Is that mode not available on the MCF8329A?  Or is it always on?

  • Hello Marc,

The MCF8329A uses Continuous Space Vector Modulation but it does not support changing the PWM mode, which is why the option is greyed out. For a description of use Continuous Space Vector Modulation please refer to section 7.3.17 of the MCF8316A datasheet.

    Joshua

  • So just to be clear, on the MCF8329A, it is always using Continuous Space Vector Modulation, whereas it can be switched on or off on the MCF8316A?  I was thinking that maybe the single shut configuration of the MCF8329A precluded Continuous Space Vector Modulation, while the three shunt configuration of the MCF8316A allowed it.

  • Hi Marc,

You are correct, the MCF8329A will always use Continuous Space Vector Modulation while the MCF8316A can be set to use either Continuous Space Vector Modulation or Discontinuous Space Vector Modulation. To use continuous space vector modulation with a single shunt configuration the switching algorithm needs to compensate for the limitation, which is done by the MCF8329A.
