DRV8889-Q1: Stepper motor driver solutions

Part Number: DRV8889-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8899-Q1, DRV8805

Tool/software:

Hello team,

There is a unipolar stepper motor in my customer's ZCU project, our DRV8889-Q1 and DRV8899-Q1 are used for bipolar stepper motor driver, so have below question need your support:

1. Do we have unipolar stepper motor driver solutions? I found DRV8805 in our website, but didn't find an automotive version.

2. Why there is no stall detection in DRV8805? How to achieve this function when the device does not integrate it?

3. Compare with low side driver, it seems there is no other special function of DRV8805 to drive the unipolar stepper motor. Could you please check if we can use the LSD like DRV81xxx to drive the unipolar stepper motor?

Thank you!

  • Hey Daniel,

Please give us another day to look into this.

  • Hello Daniel,

    1. If the unipolar motor is a six wire version it can be wired like a bipolar stepper and driven with the DRV8889-Q1. If it is a five wire version low side drivers can be used to drive it, like you said DRV81xxx-Q1 in #3, assuming the current and voltages are suitable. [see the application note mentioned below]

    2. Stall detection for automotive stepper is available only in the DRV8889(A)-Q1. No other option. Unlike BDC motors stall detection for steppers cannot be easily achieved unless it is integrated in the driver. Customer could look at BEMF while not driving the outputs but it will be a complex scheme. We do not have inputs on how to do this using discrete solutions.

    3. The DRV8805 has built-in indexer for unipolar stepper hence has STEP and DIR interface and support full, half and wave drive modes, this is unique. Most other drivers for unipolar stepper are simple low side drivers that require indexer function supported by an external MCU. For unipolar stepper drive see this application note, https://www.ti.com/lit/an/sloa312/sloa312.pdf.
