DRV8307 suitable motor type and phase voltage waveform

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8307, DRV8307EVM, DRV8308

Team,

Here're some questions from emails on the DRV8307. I'm translating since the original messages were in Chinese. I've also copied Distributor James Su from Yosun, and TSR Aaron Chen in bcc.

1. there's a delta-connected 3-phase BLDC motor, running at 9000RPM 12V/5A when driven with old MCU solution. when moving to DRV8307, the motor didn't move. is DRV8307 able to spin delta-connected motors (vs. Y-connected)?

2. Rising / falling edge of the below waveform on phase voltage seems to be too long - is this correct?

  • Hi Zhao,

    1. Yes. DRV8307 can drive delta or Y winding type with the proper (original) Hall sensor arrangement. The driver doesn't need to know the motor is delta or Y winding.

    2. The section shows the BEMF transfer not the failing or rising edge of the driving. Looks like they are correct but not perfect aligned.

    Best regards,
  • Zhao, I have tested the DRV8307 with a delta-wound motor with no problem.  If the customer is seeing a problem, I believe the phase or Hall signal mapping isn't correct.  The customer might need to try many combinations of connections.

Also, Hall signal single-ended polarity can be 2 possible conventions depending on the sensor orientation inside the motor.  The DRV8307EVM easily accommodates both with jumpers.  Notes in the schematic state:

Lastly, the rising/falling mismatch shown in the waveform means that commutation isn't aligned with the BEMF.  This could be caused by non-ideal Hall device placement.  The DRV8308 has simple configuration to tweak the timing in either direction with register ADVANCE.  The DRV8307, however, doesn't have this configuration.

    Best regards,
