Question regarding DRV8860 drtive capacity

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8860, DRV8860EVM

Hi,

I am using DRV8860 in my design to drive 8 valves. These valves consume a current of 500mA during pick up and during hold, I can maintain them at 40% (200mA). One strange observation I made about the DRV8860EVM (evam module) is that the module can't drive more than 5 valves in the method of individually activate each valve the bring it to hold before activating the next valve. DRV8860 on my board can drive all 8 valves in this method but not the one on EVM. any specific reason for the behavior? I have tried this on two modules but observed same behavior. Anyone observed this behavior?

  • Hi Arun,

Can you provide some additional information?
What happens when you try more than 5 valves? Does the nFAULT signal assert? This may be an indication of thermal issues.
    What is your ambient temperature?
Can you provide a scope capture of the current through the solenoid?

We will investigate on our side.
  • Hi Arun,

I remember tested on DRV8860 EVM with 8 channel on together with 200mA each. As Rick said, did you see an obviously over heat of the device when you active to 5 or more relays. How much difference of the boards, EVM and yours?

    Best regards,
  • Thanks Rick and Wilson.

I did not observe any overheat of on the IC. I tested in the lab environment with 23degC ambient. i did not check the nFault signal. I will check and provide the scopeshot also.
