Looking for a BLDC motor driver IC with 3 linear hall-effect sensor input

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8307, DRV8308, DRV10970, DRV8308EVM, DRV8307EVM

Hi,

I have a BLDC motor with 3 linear hall-effect sensor. Is there any BLDC motor driver IC that has 3 linear hall-effect sensor input. or is there any decoder IC can decode these 3 linear hall-effect sensor signals. Thanks.

  • Hi John,

The DRV8307 or DRV8308 may fit your needs. These devices have a built in comparator that could be used to convert the linear hall output into digital signals.

This is assuming your operational voltage is compatible with the devices.
  • Depending on how much power you need, DRV10970 might meet your needs.
  • Hi Rick,

Thanks for your reply. I saw the datasheet of DRV8307 and DRV8308 to find the input of hall sensor is POSITIVE and NEGATIVE for the hall sensor of every phase. But the linear hall sensor only has one pin to output a sine waveform. How can I connect one pin of the linear hall sensor to two pins of POSITIVE and NEGATIVE input of DRV8307 or DRV8308. Thanks.

  • Hi John,

The linear hall should be connected to the xHP pins. The xHN pins should be connected to half the voltage swing of the linear hall.
When the linear hall is above 50%, a logic one is reported. Below that a logic zero is reported.

    Will that work?
  • Hi Rick,

Thanks for your solution. It sounds should be worked. Have you tried it or did this experiments to verify this solution. I don't have any DRV8307 or DRV8308 on my hand. I can't do any test or experiment to verify it. I will use DRV8307 or DRV8308 in my design if this solution is verified. Thanks.

    Regards,

    John
  • Hi John,

I have not verified this solution on linear halls. The concept is used for hall sensors which have a single output indicating a logic zero or one.

The DRV8307EVM and DRV8308EVM shows how to connect either a hall element (2 output hall) or a hall sensor (one output hall). Both are available through the TI store for evaluation.
