DRV10866EVM: How to connect (PWM and FG pins) for optimal closed loop MCU control

Part Number: DRV10866EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10983-Q1, DRV10974, DRV10964, DRV10975, DRV10963, DRV10975EVM

Greetings:

Would like to know if there is any DRV____ evaluation module with the (optimal) closed loop MCU controller included.

The DRV10866EVM has two PWM and FG pins to allow optimal closed loop MCU control. This is for a 5V system.

I need to build and test a DRV system with closed loop MCU control. The 3-phase BLDC motors are powered from an automotive battery (12V typ) .

I need to have accurate control and be able to program (ramp up/down, maintain constant) the BLDC RPM.

What would you recommend? Thank you.

  • Hey Dan Hariton,

There are many that DRV10x products that would be compatible for using an MCU to generate a speed loop. There are a few devices that work will in 5V: DRV10974, DRV10964, and DRV10963. If you need 12V then the DRV10983-Q1, DRV10974, or DRV10975 could work better for you in a 12V automotive application.

Generally speaking, for a speed loop, we need a way to understand the current speed of the motor and the speed command that is current applied to the motor. The frequency of the FG output pin will indicate speed (or reading the speed via I2C if the device is compatible). In addition, the speed command is tied to the duty cycle % of the PWM generated from the MCU which goes to the PWM or Speed pin of the DRV10x device. If the speed is too low, increase PWM duty cycle percent and lower it if the speed is too high.

Hopefully this information helps you evaluate our devices in your design.

    Best,

    -Cole

  • Thanks, Cole.

The DRV10975EVM Evaluation Module comes as being the best answer for what I was looking for. 12V supply.
