DRV10970: Extended break mode

Team,

One of my customers has a mechanism in their system that they’d like to remain locked using the BLDC motor – they were hoping to keep the DRV10970 in Brake Mode (Shorting all Phases to GND)

From what it looks like this Motor driver enters sleep mode after approximately 1.2 ms of PWM hitting 0. They have no control over this timing and would like to know if we have any suggestions to solve this condition or if there're other BLDC motor drivers that don't have this timing scheme.

Sorry for the delay in response. I can not come up with an easy solution using DRV10970 to keep the device in brake and keep it awake once the PWM signal is taken to 0.

I assume they are looking for an integrated power stage? Does the solution need to be sinusoidal or is trapezoidal ok?

Hi Brian,

they are looking for a driver with integrated FETs, is there a different one that we have available to accomplish that? Trapezoidal would be ok

Sorry to say that DRV10970 is the only sensorsed device that we have with integrated FETs.

I'm trying to come up with some clever way to keep DRV10970 in brake, but so far have been unsuccessful.

Brian,

So there's always twake after the device enters sleep mode, even on gate drivers such as DRV8306 - I saw that it had 1ms twake. if there's no products that we have that can accommodate their request its ok, I just need to let them know.

Dmitry,

DRV8306 has a brake pin that is independent of the PWM pin. You can leave the PWM high and pull the nBRAKE pin low and this will turn off all high side FETs and turn on all low side FETs. This shouldn't put the device in sleep mode.

Other than this I don't know of a solution.
