CCS/BOOST-DRV8711: DRV8711: GUI Composer for BOOST-DRV8711 and MSP-EXP430G2ET on OSX

Part Number: BOOST-DRV8711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430G2ET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I have a Boost-DRV8711 connected to a MSP-EXP430G2ET. I have installed CCS 9.2.0.00013 on MacOS Catalina v10.15.2. I have imported the BOOST-DRV8711_FIRMWAREV1.11 project into CCS. I have also successfully connected to the MSP and have updated the firmware. I am following the instructions in Boost-DRV8711 Users Guide, SLUV976A Rev June 2019.

I want to run the Stepper Motor Demo applications on my MacOS. I am having trouble with section 4.3, Setting up the BOOST-DRV89711 GUI. I have found that the GUI Composer Runtime is not available for MacOS so I have loaded the cloud based GUI Composer. However I am unable to figure out how to load the GUI from the FIRMWARE folder into the cloud based GUI Composer. I am not even sure the GUI files in the firmware folder are compatible with the cloud based GUI. Is there any way to run this on the cloud based GUI Composer?

If not, is there any other way to load and run the GUI on MacOS? I have seen some threads that seem to suggest GUI Composer can be run inside CCS. Is this correct?

If I cannot run on MacOS, can I somehow run the Stepper Motor Demo on Ubuntu Linux? The instructions seem pretty specific to Windows.

Thank you for your help!

  • Clark,

Firmware should be uploaded to EVM's MCU to support communication between the GUI and EVM's MCU. The GUI should be installed to your computer which is related to runtime installation. The GUI installation is not related to the firmware.

What GUI runtime version does Boost-DRV8711 need when you install the GUI?

I have the following download link for Mac runtime:

    http://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/non-esd/gui_composer/runtime/gcruntime-7.3.0-osx-installer.app.zip

    http://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/non-esd/gui_composer/runtime/gcruntime-7.0.0-osx-installer.app.zip

  • Thank you for your reply.

I realize the firmware is not related to GUI Composer. However the firmware must be loaded before GUI Composer will work correctly. In my post I wanted to document what I had successfully accomplished and where I found problems. I have successfully installed the firmware on the LaunchPad.

The Boost-DRV8711 Users Guide (SLVU967A) says to use the latest version of GUI Composer.

Am I correct that the version of the GUI that I have downloaded per the Users Guide is not compatible with the cloud based version of GUI Composer?

I tried to install both copies of gcruntime you provided. Neither appear to work. They both have errors during install. They create a folder in the Applications directory, but no files are put into it. They also create another folder at [User]/guicomposer/runtime/gcruntime.v7. In that folder is a README.md. The readme says to execute ./launcher.osx. I cannot find that file on my system. SO I am unable to make either of those programs work.

I would still like to run the BOOST-DRV8711 GUI on MacOS. As I mentioned on my original post, I have seen posts where it suggests guicomposer projects can be run in CCS. Is it possible to load the GUI into CCS on MacOS? Would it be possible for someone to look at the instructions in the BOOST-DRV8711 Users Guide (SLVU967A) and let me know if it is possible to run the GUI in CCS? The GUI installation starts in Section 4.3 on page 11.

Again, thank you very much for your assistance. I have recently transitioned from one of your major competitors to TI because I have found the quality of your documentation and support to be considerably better than the competitors.

  • Clark,

Sorry, I didn't have a mac computer to check the issue. I tried it on window 10 computer and didn't get any clue to resolve this issue.

Few experience people are on vacation and will be back early next week. I will ask them and give you feedback ASAP when they come back.

  • Clark,

Sorry to say, we cannot support mac machine. We tried it on a mac machine and got the following message.

  • All you need do to run the file is right click on it and then click Open. That will force MacOS to run the file.

  • Clark,

Please let me know you run the boost-DRV8711 successfully with the mac machine.

BTW, we don't have a mac machine in our team to verify the GUI with mac or Linux system. We borrowed a mac machine to get the previous result and show the pop-up message: "GCruntime... can't be opened because apple..."
