DRV8353: Can we Use smart gate driver without MCU for BLDC motor control?

Hi I have an Application Of BLDC motor drive with hall sensor based. I have gone through the DRV8353 documents which they are saying 1XPWM mode, so can i use DRV 8353 alone and Hall sensor will connect directly to DRV8353,because i don't want any MCU to do that function and already i have an MCU that will generate a control signal(analog voltage) ,if i am converting the analog voltage to frequency. Can i connect directly to the DRV 8353?

overall inputs 

1 Hall sensor Input to DRV 8353 

2. voltage to frequency converter output will connect to drv8353.

This two input is it enough for DRV to work ?

  • Hey Shishod,

    In 1x PWM mode, the duty cycle of all the half-bridges are controlled by the input on the INHA pin. As long as you're able to modulate the input's duty cycle (controlling the motor speed), then you should be able connect your voltage to frequency converter directly to the DRV8353 INHA pin. And yes, since you're using 1x PWM mode it should only require the two inputs you listed to function. 

    Section 8.3.1.1.3 in the datasheet describes in a little more detail how 1x PWM mode works. It also describes how to connect your hall sensor and PWM (voltage to frequency converter) inputs to the DRV8353.

    Hi Paul,

    Thanks for your information.

    Currently in the motor control board its working with External speed control signal generated by DSP from the different board(Analog voltage) and that feeds to the motor controller IC. so as per our discussion I will make a  Voltage to Frequency converter and feedback to INHA pin.and Hall sensor will connect to INLA ,INHB,INLB with this connection I am able to control and run the motor?

    Hey Shishod,

    Just to reiterate, our DRV8x devices rely on a changing duty cycle of the input signal, not the frequency. The relative on-time vs off-time is what controls the current delivered to the load. As long as you are able to modify your input signals duty cycle (on/off time) with your voltage to frequency converter you should be able to drive the motor.

    With the input connections you described, yes you should be able to drive the motor in 1x PWM mode.
