UCC27211: What if the output current exceeds the maximum source/sink current?

Part Number: UCC27211

Hi TI,

I am using UCC27211 to drive a mosfet with gate resistor 2Ω. The supply voltage is 12V. Therefore, the peak output current is 6A. Yet, the maximum source/sink current is only 4A.

Will the driver IC limits the output current automatically or will it be damaged?

Best regards!

  • Hello Jiaxing,

The driver output stage of the UCC27211 and gate drivers in general will self limit the gate drive peak current based on the internal device characteristics and driving voltage from the pre drive signals. The gate driver will not be damaged from excessive output current even if the gate resistance is 0 Ohms. The only concern would be gate drive losses, or power dissipation in the driver IC and temperature rise.

    Regards,
