TPS4H160-Q1: PWM Max frequency

Part Number: TPS4H160-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS1HB50-Q1, TPS1HB16-Q1, TPS22810-Q1

Hello,

my customer is looking at driving some solenoid valves with a load current of 1.5A max using our TPS4H160-Q1 and would like to know what is the maximum PWM frequency the HSS can handle? he also has the same questions for our single channel HSS like TPS1HB50-Q1.

looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Stani

  • Hi Stani,

There are a couple of factors that would constraint the PWM frequency:

    1. The turn on and turn off slew rate. Take TPS4H160 as an example, datasheet specifics that the minimum turn on and turn off slew rate is 0.1V/us. Say customer is using a 24V bus voltage, then time to turn on and turn off the FETs will be 480us per cycle. This along will limit the PWM frequency to be max at 2kHz. Also if customer wants a specific duty cycle, for example 50%, the max PWM frequency will be further reduced to 1kHz.

    2. Another constraint is the thermal condition. Each turn-on and turn-off action will have turn-on and turn-off loss associate with it including the Coss loss and IV overlap loss. It might not be much considering it's in max of 2kHz operation, but if the ambient temp is high, this constraint may come into play as well. Customer will need to try out different frequencies to see what's the temp of the device is.

Again, these numbers are based on a lot of assumptions. Customer will need to adjust the numbers based on their applications.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

  • Hello Yichi,

thanks for your very detailed reply. i've shared with the customer.

I have an additional question: looking at TPS1HB50-Q1 or TPS1HB16-Q1, "quick turn off" also called "fast discharge" could be feasible. Is the discharge timing adjustable in those two devices? if yes how can this be achieved?

    Best regards,

    Stani

  • Hi Stani,

We do not have any quick discharge feature on our high side switch devices. This feature is limited to our load switch portfolio.

You can find devices like TPS22810-Q1 that have an integrated "quick output discharge" but these devices do not offer the same protection that High Side Switches offer.

    Thanks,
