UCD3138HSFBEVM-029: EVM is not ON and Showing Device not found in GUI

Part Number: UCD3138HSFBEVM-029
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD3138

I bought UCD3138HSFB-029 EVM and i tried to ON the EVM by applying voltage of min36V and max of 50V,and after voltage is applied i turned the S1 switch in EVM from OFF to ON but it did not turned ON,i tried to connect to device using USB to GPIO and GUI,but it shown device not found,i also updated the firmware of adapter after prompting.could you please suggest any solution.

  • Hi,

Did you re-download the code into the device? If the device ID is not found, I wonder how you can refresh the device.

Which GUI did you use? Can you make some screenshots?

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • Hi sean xu,

i am using Fusion digital power studio ver 3.0.51,since i am using this tool in secure network i can't provide you the screenshot, but it is as same in the user guide that i show below,i also observed one thing that only D14 is ON remaining D2,D19,D13 status LED's are in OFF condition,USB adapter is detected and showing no device found.

  • Hello, Teja,

D14 is used to monitor V33D. You may measure what is real voltage on V33D. D2, D19, D13 are off, maybe UCD3138 is not  powered on. If you have device GUI, you may use the device GUI to check if it is in ROM mode. Also, you may use external 3.3V to power on UCD3138, then see how much current is drawn. Normal current should be more than 70mA.

    Regards,
    Sean

  • Hi sean xu,

real voltage on the pin is coming of 3.3V,it draws current of 65mA when i given external supply,if i reset the Controller it draws 37mA,to check the mode using GUI,first it should be detected by GUI,but it is not detected,i also wonder why it's not ON,it should be ON after applying 48V input and by moving S1 to ON.on board TI marked tested OK,but there is no output.

  • Hi, Teja,

65mA seems low if the controller runs program. To double confirm if the device is the ROM mode, you need to use device GUI to scan ROM mode.

Do you have Device GUI installed in your computer?  See my previous reply. The Icon is shown below. When you install GUI, you need this to be installed.

  • hi sean xu,

yes it is ROM and i tried to load firmware through device GUI,i selected the option Don't write program check sum(stay in ROM),after the completion of download given command to execute program, but it is showing no device found.

  • Do you mean the device is not in the ROM mode and not in program mode either after reprogramming?

  • Hello Sean,

A customer of mine is having this same exact issue with the same exact EVM. He is powering the device with 48V following the steps from the user guide and got no output voltage. He is unable to connect to it with Fusion Digital Power Studio, he got "no device found." D2, D19, D13 are off, so it appears that UCD3138 is not powered on. When he tried to connect with the Device GUI, it didn't detect the device, and he scanned in ROM mode and got a message that the device may be in flash mode, no connection. He was also unable to connect in Scan program mode. What action do you recommend we take? It appears the EVM may not be functioning properly.

  • Hi sean xu,

With device GUI its is detected in ROM mode,i downloaded firmware through option in GUI,i selected option stay in ROM mode during download, after down load, in Device GUI there is a option execute program in flash, then it searches different number of addresses and finally console halt and showing no device found,if i scan it again in ROM mode it shows device found, except this device GUI, it is not communicating with any other tool in fusion digital power studio.

  • Hi, Quentin,

It seems weird to me. All EVMs were tested by third party before they were shipped out. UCD3138 should communicate with TI FDPS. Something is changed after the EVM is shipped. For a quick solution, I recommend to replace a new UCD3138, and download the firmware from TI website, then refresh the device. During re-loading firmware, don't program checksum. If you need more assistance, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • Hello, Teja,

I can verify your firmware on a different EVM, and see if it can be duplicated. Can you email  .x0  file to s-xu@ti.com.

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • Hi Sean,

The customer actually already ordered a second EVM and tested it and had the same problem, he now has both in his office. I can have him try to run through loading new firmware, but so far he hasn't been able to connect to the UCD3xxx GUI at all. According to the documentation, he needs to power the device, connect it to the computer, boot the UCD3xxx GUI, and wait for it to connect, and if that doesn't work, scan for the device, but he wasn't able to connect that way. Should he be scanning for a device in program or ROM mode? And if he's scanning in program mode, which option should he choose?

    Thanks,

    Quentin

  • Hi Sean Xu,

I requested Move the .x0 file from our internal network,it takes some time,i will forward .x0 by tomorrow, Could you send the Firmware .x0 file that's working fine in the EVM's so that i will try with that meanwhile, and then we can get some result.my mail id is tejam@medha.com.

    Regards,

    Teja.M

  • Hi, Teja,

I emailed you the .x0 file, please try it.

    Regards,

    Sean

  • Hi, Quentin,

The  first step has to connect UCD3138 with the computer through TI SAA adaptor and device GUI. Also, you may use external 3.3V to check if UCD consumes correct current, about 70mA. Can you provide what is error shown on the screen?

    Thanks,

    Sean
