[FAQ] BQ25302: How does BQ25300, BQ25302, BQ25306, BQ25303J protect against battery short?

Part Number: BQ25302
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25303J, , BQ25306, BQ25300

When battery is shorted, if the high-side FET (HSFET) of the charger turns on then there will be a direct low impedance path to GND resulting in high current through the IC which could damage IC.

BQ25300, BQ25302, BQ25306, BQ25303J protect the battery charger against battery short with integrated current sensing.

  • The Inductor current is sensed by the charger to get the HSFET current information.  The converter has cycle-by-cycle current limit to protect the HSFET. Once the current reaches certain threshold, the HSFET will be turned off.
  • After the battery short is detected, converter turns on internal linear regulator to charge and wake up the deeply discharged battery with a current of 35mA.
