TPS61032: TPS61032RSAR can't work

Good Day. I have a customer who is working with TPS61032RSAR. Please see below his query for your reference. Thank you very much.

I have ordered spare parts including the TPS61032RSAR from mouser to design a portable headphone amp and it works very well. So I ordered a TPS61032RSAR from TI to complete the product. But when inserting TPS61032RSAR into the IC circuit, it will lose immediately. Where I found a short circuit at pin 8 to GND. I tried thoroughly 5 times, still the same damage. I then tried reverting to the TPS61032RSAR I ordered from Mouser and found no issues. and work as usual. And now I don't dare to do anything with the TPS61032RSAR ordered from TI because I think it won't work anymore. And I also tried following WEBENCH® Designer 2 more times, still the same result.

All this when assembling the TPS61032RSAR which is a standalone Module that I made as a pcb. The circuit works. There is a normal 5V output voltage, but all of them are connected to the load. The TPS61032RSAR will short-circuit immediately at pin 8 to GND.

Please give me some help I am a small entrepreneur have limited funds And now I can't do anything.

Could you please ask them for their layout, schematic as well as their input voltage range, output load requirement? I need to check this before further investigation.

Hi Ray,

The schematic looks ok;

Please ask customer for battery voltage range, output load range and their layout. There is no such information from your reply.

Please ask customer share the silk screen or order number of the IC from TI and Mouser, respectively. Thanks!

Today, 24/09/2021, I tried following the circuit. WBDesign194.pdf attached to the file

Because I tried recalibrating my amplifier circuit to use less current, down to 260mA.

the TPS61032 is working normally with 5V output voltage.

But when I connect it to the amplifier circuit. The tps61032 was damaged immediately, short circuit pin 8 to gnd.

I reduced the amplifier current by removing all the LEDs so the main circuit uses 90mA less current.

Because I think it might help TPS61032 working, but “still not working.”

Vin 4.1V

Load Current 260mA.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for experiments. I appreciate your effort.

TPS61032 should be able to support current larger than just 350mA. The biggest cause of failure is bad layout. The reason for you to provide layout is:

1.Bad layout of SW-VOUT-GND loop could produce large stress to LSFET, thus breaking down the FET. The stress is larger when inductor current goes up;

2.Bad loop caused by bad layout. Inappropriate layout introduces unwanted parasitic elements. When loop is unstable, inductor current could go to very high value in transient thus causing FET failure;

Please kindly ask customer to share their TPS61032 layout for review. This is your most important thing to do now. Thank you for your help!
