Recommendation for half bridge from NextFet family

Hello,

My current design for 3 phase BLDC motor driver is DRV8320 with 2 FDMC8010DC (On Semi) on each phase. Motor is 16V, 15A maximum.

Filtering NextFet products for suitable replacement. continuous drain current up to 20A and voltage below 30V, give me following devices:

CSD86336Q3D 1 channel
CSD87330Q3D 2 channel
CSD87334Q3DT 2 channel

Which ones are suitable for use with DRV8320, and what is difference between 1 channel and 2 channel devices (they look same in datasheet)? Which one is more recommended for blcd motor drive applications?

Hi Mladen,

The BOOSTXL-DRV8320S uses CSD88599Q5DC NextFet half-bridge blocks. Feel free to compare the specs of that package to see what may be best rated for the application based on contiinuous drain current and VDS rating. Note the VGS supplied from the DRV8320S is ~10V, so choose a device that will fully enhance the MOSFETs at VGS = 10V.

Thank you for answer.

Where can I find information what is difference between 1 channel and 2 channel devices. What is "channel" in this devices? I can't find that information in device datasheets.

Hi Mladen,

Thanks for your interest in TI FETs. A one channel device is a single, discrete MOSFET. A two channel device or power block integrates two MOSFETs in a half bridge configuration into a single package. A BLDC application requires at least two single channel devices per phase and at least one two channel device per phase. If devices must be paralleled for greater current capacity or to spread the power dissipation over multiple packages, then the number of devices per phase is multiplied by the number in parallel. The advantage of the CSD88599Q5DC is that it integrate two FETs in the space of a single MOSFET increasing power density and saving PCB area. This dual-cool package also offers double sided cooling with an exposed thermal pad on the top that can be attached to a heatsink. The disadvantage is that the power dissipation of both FETs is now in a single package and smaller area than two discrete FETs. I hope this helps your understanding.
